Colombo
The bustling and resplendent city of Colombo gives an impression as if the
city is embellished with age-old architecture, marble and stained glass
buildings.
Crowded streets and busy markets of Colombo reflect the metropolis
environment with the Moor, Portuguese, Dutch and the British as its
inhabitants. Economically and politics wise, Colombo's importance is felt by
various governmental offices and prominent landmarks, like the Janahdhipahi
Mandiraya (president's residence or the queen's house in the olden days) and
the clock tower, a lighthouse 140 years old situated in the fort, Colombo's
city center.
The city exhibits diverse customs, cultures and a history of 600 years. The
deviant mosques, numerous temples, peaceful Buddhist monasteries and
churches, depict the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Colombo.
The busy markets of Colombo have a lot of branded imported goods to offer
to the travelers. Moreover, the beautiful beaches and nearby islands of
Colombo add unforgettable pleasures to vacation. In all Colombo is a busy
city replenished with cultures, traditions and customs that describe the
history and sovereign statute of the nation.
Galle
Scenic landscapes and beautiful coastline accompanies you as you head
towards walled city of Galle. Standing since the sixteenth century at the
seaside, Galle is decorated with picturesque landscapes and ancient
architecture. 116 km down southwest from Colombo, this town is proclaimed as
an archaeological reserve and world's heritage site.
Galle witnessed the colonial period of the Dutch, Portuguese and the
British. The Portuguese took Galle from the Sinhala king in 1587 followed by
the Dutch rule in 1640. The prevalent architecture of Galle discloses the
changes in Galles architecture, customs and way of life during the reign of
distinctive rulers.
Today's town has grown greatly into the hinterlands, but the Fort in the
heart of this town stands still as the picture of the bygone era. Buddhist
monasteries and sacred Hindu and Tamil God temples reflect the diversity of
customs and culture prevailing in this town.
Zwart Bastion, Leey Baan Street and the beaches are the prime attractions
of Galle. Splendid mansions of the British era speak of the town's
prosperity in the previous times. Beautifully set rubies, sapphire and other
precious stones along with the famous Galle lace were brought by me as
souvenirs reminding me of this exotic destination.
Kandy
Located 60 miles Northeast of Colombo, Kandy is also known as the "Maha
Nuwara," or the Great City, in the Sinhala language. Kandy being the
last capital of Sinhala kings, is the cultural, historical and religious
center of Sri Lanka.
A visit to the lavishing tea estates, tropical lush green jungles, gushing
rivers and exotic waterfalls that surround Kandy is a memorable experience.
After the Portuguese invasion of Sri Lanka in 1505, the Sinhala rulers moved
their kingdom to the safety of "Kanda", or hill which later
anglicized to Kandy.
Dalada Maligawa or the tooth temple houses Sri Lanka's most sacred relic,
the tooth of Buddha. Beautiful Kandy lake is located in heart of the city.
Many small villages and cities that surround this small town of Kandy are
famous for their homemade jewelry, silverware, brassware, and lacquered
products.
Famous among the foreign tourists are the ornamental ashtrays, walking
sticks, and handles for various implements. These items crafted to
perfection are the finest art objects that the country of Sri Lanka offers
to the rest of the world.
Hambantota
As one moves 240km (150 miles) from Colombo the seascape changed from the
succulent green forests of the southwest to open and picturesque landscapes
of Hambantota.
Standing on a sandy headland, Hambantota faces the sea where vast fleet of
fishing canoes and small boats dot the horizon with their small triangular
sails. In nearby National Parks of Bundala, Ruhuna and Udawalawe there is a
chance to explore the rare, bewildering species of elephant, crocodile and
buffalo.
The temples at Kataragama speak of the changes that the Sri Lankan
architecture and customs had undergone in the bygone era. Hambantota like
other south coast towns and villages is gradually escalating to be a
travelers haven with the luxurious facilities of resorts and travelling.
